I am a sophomore in high school and my teachers have been pressuring us to think about college…?
I think I know where i want to go but that is because thats where my family wants me to go. I want to study fashion and I they don’t have a good fashion program. What should i do? I want to go to a design school in new york or california but i hate living to far from my parents. Help.
The concerns that you are voicing are the reasons why your teachers want you to start thinking about colleges now.
Use this time to gather information about schools that do offer what you want to study. Look at what their requirements are and see that you are preparing correctly by taking the right classes in high school and maybe even taking summer/holiday work that support your interest.
Also, open up a dialog with your parents. It doesn’t need to be confrontational, and no decisions have to be made right now, but as you gather info on schools, share it with them. Talk about careers and your interests, look at the locations and costs, share the information with your parents so that they, too, can start to get more comfortable with the idea of your going off to college. They will also appreciate that you are looking at all of the information and options in a mature way.
If you do this now, when you are a junior you may be able to visit a few of the schools that interest you. Then when you are a senior you will know which ones to apply to.
Remember, you aren’t in this alone: you have teachers (people who have been though the searching/application process), couselors who are trained to help you through the steps, and best of all, parents who care about you and want you to be happy, safe and able to take care of yourself.
So face your fears and start the process as though it were a project for one of your classes. If you do, you will be more likely to end up at a school that is right for you.
