Who in here is a fashion designer or a great art and their parents are against?
I'm studying fashion and graphic design. My parents have been fighting for years my ambition even threatened to ignore me for choosing any career they do not approve. I am from a family Asian, so I know that most Asian parents want their children to become doctors or whatever is well paid. From what I see and hear, Asian parents hate everything related to art as they consider it a useless major that will lead us nowhere in life. So any of you non-Asia and their parents are against or do not pass that is specializing in everything related to art? From what I've seen on television and media, seems that all white parents are very supportive of career choice for their children. So it is true?
I have a similar problem, and I am white. Now I'm in my third year of Civil Engineering and I absolutely hate it, I can not concentrate and I am sad all the time. I want to major in Labour Studies, however the last Once brought up the fact that my parents hate engineering threatened to throw me in the house, or I do the work in a fish factory. As a result, I'm still in engineering, but I hate it. When I look back, I realize the intense pressure on me to go into engineering, probably since I started to play with Lego. After attending a program called "Career Trek" in elementary school, my parents, basically, my career had chosen for me and pushed me along. So was the direct entry to engineering to me, though he said he wanted to have a general first year to figure out what I wanted. It's funny, when I was 12 I was told I could be anything I want. Six years later I said it could be any kind of engineer I want. I think most parents want what they think is best for their child. Unfortunately, many of them think they should get into a prestigious career, well paid regardless of children's interests or the prestige value and more money than their interests children. And some of them also have problems of control and want their children do everything they do not have the opportunity due to economic factors or simply was not good enough in school. I suspect there may be a difference-making cultural attitudes like this more common in certain communities (do not know if it is a thing of Asia, or simply a matter of immigrants in general, or a little of both), but of course, As with any broad generalizations like this, there are plenty of exceptions (like my parents), but congratulations to you for having the eggs to confront their parents and take what you want. I know you'll be happier for it.
